About Diane Hofstede

As Council Member

In 2005, Diane worked hard to get elected to the City Council and since then she has worked even harder on behalf of all of the Third Ward, as well as the citizens of Minneapolis at large. Her vision is to make our neighborhoods livable, safe, and sustainable.

Diane is a consensus builder, bridging our diverse communities to one another, helping every voice in our neighborhoods be heard, and bringing people together to create the synergies we need to achieve our goals and improve our lives.

Her accomplished record in public service is the result of the relationships she nurtures and the long hours she puts in each day. A firm believer in the maxim, “many hands make light work,” she strives to engage neighborhood groups and individuals in the process of working together to cultivate our community. In the four years since she was elected to the City Council, Diane has made a difference.

Career Summary

Diane Hofstede’s record of tireless community activism and dedicated civic leadership begins long before she was elected in 2005 to represent the Third Ward to the Minneapolis City Council.

Throughout the 1990s, Diane fought long and hard for Minneapolis residents and neighborhoods. As an elected member of the Minneapolis Public Library board — serving two terms as board president — she pushed to improve library services and facilities in our neighborhood. She was instrumental in making the new Downtown Library a reality; chairing the Library Referendum Committee which raised $140 million and won 68% of the votes, and co-chairing the Library Implementation Committee with Mayor Rybak.

The hallmark of Diane’s career is relentless dedication to improving businesses, public institutions, and neighborhoods throughout the city of Minneapolis. Whatever her role — both as an elected official or as the founding board member of a neighborhood advocacy organization — she has delivered the same, strong clear message: Together we can make our neighborhoods better places to live, work, learn, and grow.
