Transportation

Community engagement is integral to the planning process for any transportation development proposal. Designing pedestrian-friendly business nodes, coordinating bike trailways and bus routes, and keeping our neighborhoods safe and attractive will require participation from all of us. I am dedicated to creating energy efficient and green transportation options for the future that reduce air pollution and consumption of carbon fuels.

Investment in public transportation and new rail transit options makes good environmental sense and good business sense. Efficient and effective mass transit reduces traffic congestion and air pollution, creates new job opportunities, and provides working people with an affordable, reliable transportation option to get them to and from their places of employment. Our transportation solutions will be multimodal. We will blend bus, rail, bicycle, and pedestrian throughways to achieve our common goals of reducing carbon emissions and our reliance on foreign oil.

Accomplishments

  • I sponsored a Ward-wide Transportation Summit in 2008 to review, inform, and discuss current transportation options and the impact on our neighborhoods.
  • We have held extensive discussions in the Third Ward about redeveloping Marshall Avenue. There is a strong desire within the community to create a continuous bike lane along this corridor.
  • The Capital Long Range Improvement Committee recommended approval to the Mayor and the City Council, for the 18th Avenue N.E. Bike Trail. This is included in the 2009 budget year request.

I will actively and vigorously support construction of the North Star commuter rail line, and work with neighborhoods and adjacent wards to create neighborhood-friendly hubs integrated with a comprehensive traffic and neighborhood development plan.

I favor the Bottineau LRT corridor in North Minneapolis.

I support bicycle transit options for North and Southeast Minneapolis that are integrated with the Bicycle Master Plan which is designed to connect bike paths and trailways across the city.

I will actively promote expansion of bus routes and other mass transit options to help reduce air pollution and improve the air quality throughout the city.

I support implementation of the Access Minneapolis Plan.
